Thanks for your very informative response. Naturally, prior to our committing to doing this project, we will be securing professionals to do the job. My purpose in communicating with you is so I will have a better understanding of what things I need to consider when I am talking to the "professional" installers. I like that you identify safety as a first factor, and the "other" options that we have to evaluate before we make our decision. Thanks again!

Arlene.
In reference to your question about Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (LP). You can use either source for your fire feature. Natural Gas is a cleaner burning fuel and is for most part sourced through out your house. Using this source to fuel your fire feature would entail plumbing gas lines to your fire feature (underground). Depending on how far away your fire features are from your house and keeping in mind your landscaping. You may want to consult a Gas Plumber to determin cost associated with this.
To use Propane is an alternative though sometimes a small hassle. Exchanging tanks. Finding an area that you can place the tank so that it is not an eye sore to your surroundings. And you would want to find a way to conceal the gas line running to your fire feature so that it is not exposed above ground. You will also want to include using a AIR MIXER prior to your fire ring to lean out the Propane Gas, as Propane when it burns gives off a black soot and could eventually clog your fire ring holes and of course you would not want the soot floating in the air and potentially getting on you.
Another factor to consider is the size of tank you would be using to supply fuel to your fire feature. You would want to consult with your local propane dealer in reference to the size of fire ring and how many hours of the week you would be using this fire feature. Understand your BTUs (British Thermal Units) This is a measurment used to determine the gas usage and capacity of your fire ring.

These factors are important to creating an enjoyable fire feature for years to come.

Considerations:
Fire Ring Size and BTU Rating. Note: Always use a Stainless Steel Fire Ring for Outdoor use. Standard black iron fire rings tend to rust in a short period of time.
Distance from house to Fire Feature. (Consult with your Gas Plumber)
Gas Source: Liquid Propane (LP) or Natural Gas (NG)
Safety Shut Off Ball Valve.
Ignition System: Automated Remote, Spark Ignition, Manual Match Lit?
What is going to be your source of fire pit? Fire Bowl, In Ground?
What are you using to top your fire feature? Fire Glass, Lava Rock, Fiber Rock?

Make sure when designing this fire feature, where you are placing it so that it is not around an area that could be a Fire Hazard.

I hope this information helps you in your fire feature design. Please feel free to inquire about any other questions.

Remember. Never leave a fire unattended.

Sincerely,

Backyard Blaze.

I am a homeowner and looking to implementing some of your features. Can you advise me as to whether I should choose natural gas over propane?
